The Athletic Renaissance: Brainstorming
Let's brainstorm...
The Athletic Renaissance: The Revival of Sports in the International Western Union
The purpose of this Brainstorm is to figure out how we should revive athletic competition in the region.
Questions that need Answering:
1. What sports will be organized?
For any sport to get off the ground, it needs participation. Many months prior to our regional crises, a racing circuit was hosted by Kialga. It proved successful while it lasted, with several participants able to get involved by simply coming up with a name, racing number, and two numbers between one and ten for statistics. Some sports will be easy to participate it. Others may require a certain knowledge of the sport in question, a team with a list of members, or other things which might make the roleplaying less inclusive. Still, the most popular sport in NS seems to be Soccer/Association Football, which requires a team of players for participation.
2. How should they be organized?
Should there be organized leagues or tournaments? Who would organize them? Should there be organizers, or should it be organized by the participants? How much power should organizers wield?
3. How do we keep score?
What scorinators should be used? Should certain ones be recommended or restricted? What sort of methods could be alternatives to scorination, should roleplayers want less computing and more involvement?
4. Which organized events do we need?
Should there be a cap on how many events one sport can have? Would having too many unassociated events make competition too diluted? Who can start these events? How much guidance would new events, especially ones on large scales such as big leagues and extravagant tournaments, need in the beginning? The middle? What if they stop? Who's going to pick up slack?
Way too many questions, not nearly enough answers.
...
Let's rectify that.
Any suggestions?

Re: The Athletic Renaissance: Brainstorming
Outside of NationStates, I am not and have never been an active participant in sports. Thus, it is my view that the sports we choose should be on the simpler side, like racing. Also, this enables the use of software to determine the winner, rather than a more RP style of play which could end up being corrupted by the participants and/or the overseers.
I would argue that organization depends largely upon the sport that is chosen. If we choose golf, as a individual based sport, it may be easier to organize than basketball, a team sport.
As far as scoring is concerned, I advocate the use of computer simulations. It keeps it fair and does not have the capability to hurt someone based upon a lack of knowledge about the sport.

I think it woulb probably be best to stick to scorinators most of the time, especially for large-scale competitions. I also think, however, that it would be neat for there to be alternatives for exhibitions or something that have more involved roleplaying aspects.
