IWU Space Program

Post by Pharthan on September 7th 2013, 10:39 pm

International Western Union Space Program

Current Projects:
International Western Station
Pictures will be provided via the game Kerbal Space Program.
Older iWU Space Station:

Post requested station parts for your nation to dedicate.
For suggest parts, though not limited to these parts (the game is quite extensive), see:

Please keep requested station parts small, as they generate lag in-game if they get too big. Multiple components are allowed, however, I will be designing only one SSTO Shuttle. It's not exactly an easy thing to do. I spent roughly 4 hours last night in design and testing and only just got a design that can efficiently take-off while having sufficient cargo capacity, not even yet get into space.
The shuttle is, however, not required and may be utilized more as crew-transport... or for funzies.
All pods will have at least one docking station, as it will be required for construction. The Docking Station/Ring will likely be incorporated into the Fuel Pod, as fuel-sections make effective docking-port extensions.

If I can develop a shuttle that can efficiently take off and whatnot, I may allow for other nations to request a shuttle of their own (likely limited to two-to-four shuttles, or I may make a little grouping of shuttles alongside the runway.)
The reason the shuttles are not required, and will be in fact difficult to use at times, is because I can simply launch the station parts with a "Transition" phase that will power them to being near the station, then detach from that phase prior to docking, then simply "abort" the transition phase section.
Shuttles will be easiest to use with a station-part inside of them to begin with, launching with that already installed. I may come up with some complicated "reloading" vehicle that I can put new parts in and lower them into an open shuttle-bay.

Required:
Shuttle - Pharthan (LIMITED)
Habitation - Veceria (In Orbit, Attached)
Station Core/Solar/Docking Ring - Pharthan - (In Orbit, Attached)

Hangar Bay 1- Unclaimed
Science - Veceria
Communications- Qora
Fuel Pod -
Docking Station/Ring -
Cargo -
Tug/Transport -
Greenhouse (3 Required) -
Escape Pod-
Refueler-Rescue Vehicle-
Future Projects:
Deep Space Explorer

Individual Space Stations will not be entertained. Individual satellites may. Stations simply take far too much work.

I'll be more or less just posting pictures of what's been constructed.

Okay, so after probably 10 cumulative hours of trying to design and fly a SSTO (Single Stage To Orbit) Shuttle...
NOT HAPPENING. But that's not really an issue. We'll still have spaceplane fighters/transports. The issue isn't getting a spaceplane into orbit, it's getting one that has a cargo capacity into orbit.

First image!
Presenting the Hawk fighter, currently docked inside of it's own personal Engine Ring, which I'll be using as "hangars" for small craft. Also attached is a fuel-booster pod, which will likely be scrapped in the next installment, or just kinda... float... and stuff. I can probably get it to maintain a Trojan orbit with the station should I need it later.

So, yeah. Bolidor, unfortunately your Green House piece is going to have to be a later add-on.
Any particular preferences on what it does? (Options for Green House Function: Produce Xenon, which is used to power high-efficiency but almost-pointlessly weak engines, produce fuel, or produce mono-propellant which is used for maneuvers (not propulsion, with exception of docking, which it is absolutely necessary for.)

Greenhouse preferences and options

Post by Bolidor on September 9th 2013, 11:30 am

Since there isn't a whole lot of Xenon in bananas, we'll go with either fuel or mono-propellant. Either way, the International Western Union Space Station would then be banana-powered, right? (You could use plantains if you prefer; we've got plenty of suckers of all sorts of varieties.)

Also, we're just sponsoring it, right? Because otherwise we've got a fellow who builds our naval mine fishing vessels who says he could whip up a greenhouse with nothing more than some lumber, cinder blocks, styrofoam, plexiglass, a few nails and screws and a lot of duct tape. Would you be interested in his greenhouse instead?

Warranty void if powered by bananas.

(That's actually a Kerbal Space Program joke, most of the product descriptions contain "Warrant Void if..." i.e. for the Accelerometer, "Warranty Void if Shaken," or the Thermometer "Warranty Void if Engineer admits it's a store-bought model glued to some wires.")

I've actually decided that your Greenhouse is going to be a section, with two; one fuel, one monopropellant. Likely what it's going to be is that there will be a series of Habitation/Greenhouses on one side, using a pair of science modules on either end of my existing Command Module as extensions.

So, I've got the Command Module (with an added asthetic Communications Array to please Qora. As well as myself because those do look cool.)

Yes, everyone is more or less sponsoring modules. I'm taking requests on what they are to look like, or any crazy ideas.

We actually probably don't need more than one other Greenhouse assembly; I might do an additional LFO (Liquid Fuel/Oxide, or just simply fuel), and a Xenon.  I've just decided to combine two pods into one.

I literally just tried docking a transport. Yeah, didn't go so well. It swapped over to Station Control after I docked it, acknowledging that it was properly docked without issue... and then exploded without reason.

Okay, so, I think I may actually have found a way to have a Shuttle...
EDIT: Hokay, so, I've got the shuttle docked. I plan on posting pictures once I reattach my solar-panel section. I had a much larger one, but it was lag-festing, so I nixed that one.

Yeah, so, I can barely get shuttles into orbit. They end up having wings so large that they're equal or greater in size that the station - and they're biplanes, which is odd but incredibly efficient and seems to be the convention KSP players go with when developing cargo SSTOs (Single Stage To Orbit).

I think the reason why I'm having such a hard time getting my shuttles into orbit is more skill and patience related now, but I do have one docked and it has the ability to take three crewmen with him back down to the planet.
If I want to make a large crew-transport version, all I have to do is put in containers for crew into the cargo bay, which I predict I can transport twelve at a time, plus an additional 3 (Assuming the pilot isn't counted.)

(OOC: Updated Station View!)

"Sir, they want a kitten statue."
"...Okay...?"
"On the station. Near the station. Anything."
The Director of the Pharthan Space Program, who had become the impromtu director of the entire IWU Space Program due to the fact that all currently launches had so far come from Pharthan launch-pads, rubbed his temples. "Tell those freaking cat-lovers it's not possible."
"We have, sir," said his aid. "They won't have any of it. They want a cat statue, or as they call it, the 'Kitteh' statue. Also, sir, they'd like to perform experiments with cats aboard the station."
His palm again returned to his forehead, "They what?" He said with some exasperation, expecting a more thorough response.
"They said they'd like to bring cats aboard with them, I assumed they'd be performing experiments with them."
"Next they'll be bringing aboard buttered toast and seeing which way it falls, and start making claims they can create a perpetual motion machine by duct-taping buttered bread to the cat in space...
"..."
"..."
"... Well, actually, sir, the Adviser from Fenburg did sa-"
"G@#$%&# Jim!"
"You asked me to go over the proposals, sir."
"Why... why do I even bother with these people."
"The Gatito Team did ask for a-"
"No. No. Nononononono."
"This one isn't about cats, sir. Or 'Kittehs' as they insist."
"Fine. Go."
"They want a Space Cannon, sir."
"F@#$ it. Yes. Go. Make it so. I've had it."
"Okay, sir... Really, sir? A Space Cannon?"
The Director pounded his head on the desk, but a little bit too hard. He promptly rendered himself unconscious. Had he not, he would have rebounded and yelled at his aide for several hours straight. Instead, they took his motionless for complete and utter surrender to what seemed - in relation to the other proposals - a reasonable request and quietly left the room.
The Director was later ushered off to the hospital with expectations of a severe concussion. By the time he returned, drawings had been completed and millions of credits in R&D had been thrown into the Space Cannon Project - so he threw up his hands and let it happen.

Yeah, at least I know my idea of having a giant statue to the Giant Space Lamia isn't going to happen. Yeah, go ahead and have your entire space station get devoured by the giant space Lamia in a fit of ravenous anger.

I instead ask that we should put guns on the station. We'll never know when a bunch of eco terrorists become president and demand that we all should start nuking the whales and all.

The problem with guns is that they tend to cause the station to spin. I just tried; the docking coupler failed to latch; even just the defensive gun resting against the station and firing it caused it to move. I suppose I could just put on the SAS, that should help.
I've got it made. It's a "gun", rather, a turret that has a series of decoupling fuel tanks with rockets on them.

"So... how is our giant space cannon coming?" The Director had giant bags under his eyes. Many sleepless nights had come with dealing with the other nations on this station project."
"Well, the best news I have is that there might be some use for it."
This raised an eyebrow. "Well, sir, one thing we have been wanting is a cheap way to deploy satellites. If we put up a few satellite pods with some reinforcement to their structure, we can save money by simply launching them from the cannon."
"That... is just crazy enough to work, Jim. Well done. Now if we could just launch the Gatito's delegate from it." The Director was, for once, mildly happy.
"Actually, sir, that might be plausible."
"For once, a ridiculous proposition I like."
"There was one other matter - a defensive cannon. Smaller. For asteroids and such. More of a missile-turret."
"Okay." His day was getting better and better. In light of the other proposals, these seemed logical.
"Yes, Gatito and Qora both seem to like this idea."
"Really? Them? Okay, any projected dates?"
"Today, sir." Jim the aide replied.
"No, I meant for launches, not the meeting."
"Today, sir. They just docked a half hour ago."
Silence.
"They... they did what, Jim?"
"I only just found out myself. Apparently that mock-up test fire yesterday was a real launch."
A few deep breaths later. "The station is fine? Nothing is wrong?"
"Without a hitch, sir." The Director took a few more deep breaths, trying to please himself, until Jim spoke up again. "Except for one. There's a cat at the controls of the gun."

----------------+OOC+-----------------
New updated screenshots! Added Qora's long awaited Communications Pod, which also functions as an Escape Unit! People might even survive using it!
Also, the Defensive Turret! There have been some suggestions of adding guns and the like, so I finally did. More or less a missile-turret, the defensive turret has 8 shots.
And.
A completely pointless gunner's seat for our newest astronaut, Kitteh!
Kitteh having fun:
Kitteh is as sharp as a marshmallow and as brave as an ant! (Those suckers don't stop for anyone, no matter how huge!) He loves to ride in the external seat of the gun! It doesn't actually do anything ((Really, it actually does function as a control seat for the entire station)), but he likes feeling the power and watching things almost-get-hit by our state-of-the-art '60s technology!
Kitteh at the controls:

Kitteh seems to be overly ecstatic... everyone else looks downright terrified
Note the Astronaut who arrived with Kitteh, Q'Hora! Just as sharp as his friend... but considerably more chicken.
--

So! The iWU Station!
